This will be the sixth year, I think, that Painter's has hosted a busy, informative, social and very fun weekend of discussions and seminars on photography, presented on April 29, 30, and May 1/2011 by myself and an exciting group of talented image makers.
The subjects range from technique to conceptual, and from simple tips to more advanced projects.
The seminars are all day Saturday & Sunday in comfortable sized groups, pretty relaxed and open to questions and comments from the attendees. There is plenty of interaction between the presenters and those attending.
Saturday afternoon ends with a lively and fun panel discussion with lots of questions and interesting personal insights into different approaches and perspectives on being a photographer. This is followed by a chance for all of us to schmooze over a glass of wine and some finger food presented by Painter's.
Sunday afternoon after the final seminar, there is time for those participants to have "speed - critiques" (sorta like speed dating without the messy commitments) with the presenters. So people are invited to bring along a few of their favourite images, preferably in print or on their laptops, for quick 5 minute feedback on their own work. This has been informative and well received by those who are looking for some 'outside' perspective.
If you haven't been there before, http://www.painterslodge.com/ is a beautiful fishing resort that is the ideal West Coast destination for fisher-people and/or those looking for relaxation and comfort.
The dining room has a tremendous menu and the pub is a great place to connect and carry on the lively discussions that get started in the lectures.
Across the straits on Quadra Island is the Lodge's 'sister' resort of April Point Lodge, with it's own excellent dining room, sushi bar and Aveda Spa!!! We're definitely not roughing it with the comforts of these two resorts available to us all.
There are packages for the weekend including lectures, rooms, brunches and the wine & cheese reception vailable for those interested in taking it all in, and day passes for those not able to hang around for it all.Hopefully, we'll see you at Painter's at the end of April.
